The Federal Trade Commission is out with a list of the top consumer complaints for 2008.
We have a look at the top five.
1.Identity theft
2.Third party and debt collection
3.Shop at home and catalog sales
4.Internet services
5.Foreign money offers and counterfeit check scams
The FTC says complaints in our area helped push some cities higher on the list for identity theft.
Montgomery ranked 14th.
Macon ranked at 22nd.
Auburn and Opelika ranked 44th.
Columbus ranked 77th.
The FTC says they got over a million complaints in 2008.
We are on your side with how to report your complaints for 2009.
First, get all your information together. That could include check numbers, dates of transactions, and company names.
You start at the FTC website and you look for the box consumer complaint. The first question it will ask you, is your complaint concerning identity theft? Then you'll go through a series of questions and you can enter in details about the company or transaction in question. If you have all the information handy, it could take as little as five minutes.
You can also call the FTC at 1-877-382-4357.
And you do have other options for filing a complaint about a company or scam.
You can call the Better Business Bureau. Here in Columbus that number is 706-324-0712 or you can visit their website.
You can also make your complaint through your state’s Office of Consumer Affairs, visit this link for Alabama and this site for Georgia.
