At 7:15 Monday morning, a Phenix City family discovered racist slurs all over its four family cars parked in the driveway.
"I'm just heart-breaking right now as to what has happened," said Carrie Mack, homeowner and single mother of four daughters.
Mack said that when she saw the red paint and "KKK" letters, she knew it was a hate crime. But Phenix City investigators can't be sure yet that that's the case.
"It has to be proven to be a hate crime," said Robert Casteel, assistant chief of police. "Certainly the slogan 'KKK' doesn't mean its' a hate crime."
But the Mack family said it feels hated by this event, which one family member said was frustrating because, "we all about love."
"We teach love," said Alice Daniel, sister of Carrie Mack. "So we love this person, even though they did this incident."
Investigators have not nailed down any suspects at this time, but they hope to develop some soon. The case will be considered "criminal mischief," though the door is open for a district attorney to add a hate crime charge should a suspect go to court.
