39-year-old James Anderson was a 3-year veteran of the sheriff's office. He began as a reserve deputy nearly five years ago after his family participated in a role-play training exercise with the sheriff's office. He joined Lee County in November of 2006. Last April he was awarded Employee of the Month, and recently, he became a field training officer for his leadership.
"When some of the younger deputies would have a question....it wouldn't surprise me a bit if the comment wasn't made, 'well, watch what James does.," said Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones. "That kind of guy."
A memorial service is planned for Tuesday at 2 p.m. CST at the First Baptist Church in downtown Opelika.
