Nearly two thousand construction workers are on post daily with projects related to BRAC. The old Faith Middle School is coming down to make room for a hotel and lodge built for Fort Benning visitors.
Gary Jones is the Columbus Chamber's Military Affairs Vice President. Jones says this project is right on course with the completion of BRAC in a little more than a year.
“It is phenomenal whats taking place. Many people say when is BRAC going to happen? BRAC is happening! There are over 2,400 more people on Fort Benning today than there was in November 2005 when BRAC was announced.”
The current Faith Middle School sits on main post. It is just a few hundred yards away from the old one. Jones says the next year will be one for the books in Columbus.
“It’s a point in our history of which this is one huge economic development project that we're focused on.” This 182-room hotel and lodge is one of about fifteen projects currently underway.
