The American Postal Workers Union showing their support today for the Columbus postal system. They protested outside the downtown post office--voicing concerns about the possibility of moving the mail processing center from Columbus to Macon. If that happens, Michael Miles, spokesperson for USPS, says eight employees could be affected. They will be given the choice of transferring to another Columbus post office. Union members say the move only favors Macon and they feel it will affect how Columbus' mail is processed.
The US Postal Service released this statement today, quote "The consolidation of some mail processing operations from Columbus into Macon is being considered as a means of reducing costs and increasing efficiency....Consolidation, if approved, would have no noticeable affect on service, would not impact retail operations or delivery and will not result in the loss of any jobs for postal employees"
A decision is expected later this month.
