A Birmingham judge ruled Monday that Alabama's attorney general has legal authority over Governor Bob Riley's anti-gambling task force. Circuit Judge Robert Vance cites Alabama Supreme Court rulings that give the attorney general the power over the governor in such cases. Judge Vance says Attorney General Troy King has two weeks to advise the court whether he supports the closing of a bingo operation in Lowndes County by the anti-gambling task force. The judge says King has taken a "curious stance" of complaining about task force raids but not exercising his power to stop them. King and Governor Riley are scheduled to meet Wednesday to hash out the legal issues involved in the case. Governor Riley called today's ruling by Judge Vance "judicial activism at its worst." He plans an appeal.
