Folks moving our way as a result of BRAC will start arriving by the end of the month. That means this summer could be prime enrollment time for newly relocated families. Several schools and school districts from our area made the trip to Fort Knox last week for The Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce's information fair. Their main objective? To recruit more students. Principal of Smith Station High School, Jason Yohn says their new high school which is under construction is their major recruitment tool.
“It's a good community builder to have a brand new facility to offer new students and soldiers and their families.”
The Opelika City Schools are also hoping to see an increase in students.
Superintendent Mark Neighbors says they hope to recruit folks by showcasing the quality of people already in their school system.
“We do offer that hometown hospitality, that southern hospitality where we do call you by your first name, look at you when we talk to you, shake your hand.”
Neighbors says they aren't sure on the exact number of students moving to their area, but are excited about the possibility of a boost in enrollment. Fort Benning expects about 7,000 school age children to make the move to our area over the next year and a half.
