District attorney Nick Abbett said in his opening statement Lockhart made Burk remove all of her clothing, leaving only her socks. He says Burk jumped out of her own car trying to escape, when Lockhart shot her.
A parade of prosecution witnesses took the stand Friday including Burk’s father. He testified that he spoke with Lauren just 3 hours before she was killed.
Adrian and Savannah Benford also took the stand. They both say they were the first to see Burk walking naked on the side of North College Street looking for help. Savannah Benford says when she and her husband turned their car around in Farmville Baptist Church parking lot they saw a black Honda Civic in the parking lot running with the lights on. Savannah says she thought the person had also seen Burk on the side of the road and was getting out to come and talk to them about what to do. Savannah says she saw an arm reach out the driver's side pulling the door close, then sped off. The Benford's say when they got back to Burk she was lying in the roadway naked.
Eric Duke says that is when he arrived. Duke says he took off his jacket and covered Burk’s body up with it. He says he bent down to see if she was okay, when she gasp for breath and tilted her head back. That was the last time anyone says they saw Lauren Burk breathe.
Dr. John McFarland also took the stand today. He was the trauma doctor in the East Alabama Emergency Room the night Burk died. He says Burk bled to death. Dr. Thomas Passler and Dr. Paul Walsh are veterinarians at Auburn University. They also took the stand today. Passler and Walsh say they heard two gun shots coming from the direction where Burk’s body was found the night of the murder.
