West Point, Ga.-based telecommunications company Knology Inc., who signed a franchise agreement with the city of Opelika on Sept. 27, reports plans for a franchise in Opelika are moving along as scheduled.
“Our budget for the Opelika franchise will be around $10 million,” said Royce Ard, general manager for Knology of Columbus, Ga.
Knology is also currently putting an approximately $20 million fiber-optic system in place that will provide service to the city of Auburn, Ard said.
Ard says Knology may select a more densely populated area of Opelika to begin construction, since fiber will have to be run through the city to reach its hub building, which will be located at an office on Skyway Drive near the Auburn/Opelika city limits. A telecommunications building to house the electronics that will provide service to Knology’s Auburn and Opelika customers is slated to be constructed by the second quarter of 2011, Ard said.
An administrative office space at that same Skyway Drive location will open early November, he added.
Knology’s construction in Auburn continues on schedule as well, Ard said.
“We met our scheduled date for installing our first Auburn test customers and the test is progressing nicely. We will begin adding our first paying customers by the end of October,” Ard said. “Initially, our services will be available in a limited number of neighborhoods, but as we build out our network we will contact homeowners and let them know when services are available in their area.”
Knology projects being able to offer service to its first Opelika customers by the second quarter of 2011.
“Knology is very excited about entering the Opelika market,” Ard said. “The technology that we are deploying in the Auburn/Opelika markets will allow us to offer consumers a much better product than they have today. This, along with Knology’s commitment to customer service, will greatly improve the overall experience for consumers in Auburn and Opelika.”
