Lawyers representing the family of a victim are going after Chrysler and the R&J Tire company.
A van from Tabernacle of Prayer and Deliverance church in Columbus blew a tire earlier this month, while carrying 19 passengers to a revival. The driver of the van lost control. Four passengers were killed. The other 15 were all injured.
“I call them rolling death traps because that’s exactly what they are,” Beasley said.
The suit alleges Chrysler and R&J Tire Company are responsible for product liability, failure to warn the users of their products, and negligence for the unsafe conditions of the van and tires.
Beasley said, “We still have no telling how many hundreds of thousands of 15 passenger vans that are still being used in this country and they are dangerous, and they could be, they really should be recalled.”
Troopers said a rear tire blew out and caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, hit a median and overturn at least twice.
Beasley said his firm has handled multiple lawsuits like this one involving 15 passenger vans. He says in this case there could be more charges against Chrysler and the tire company in the future.
“We may have other later, as we go through the discovery, most of these cases don't go to trail, we've handled a number of these cases and the companies want to settle because they don want the publicity. They don't want people to find out how bad they are,” Beasley said.
Beasley said right now, they are waiting until all the defendants are served.
Then they will begin with the pre-trial phase, which includes gathering experts to support their claims.
Beasley said his firm does not plan to sue anyone who was riding in the van.
He said they believe the driver was not at fault.
