Soldiers put a new twist on an old tradition when they broke a bottle of Maker's Mark bourbon on a tank that traveled from Kentucky where the alcohol is made.
The brand new 130-square feet Armor School facility will train young and old soldiers over the course of 12 weeks.
Private James Hamilton said, “I know for a fact that Fort Benning is one of the best places to train so, I'm expecting the best training from the staff and the cadre.”
Another member of the inaugural class said there was some confusion on where exactly he would do his training.
Private First Class Scott Walsh said, “I got my orders, I was suppose to go to Fort Benning, then my drill sergeant told me I was going to Fort Knox, then my first sergeant told me I was going to Fort Benning so I bought a ticket to come to Fort Benning.”
About 3 soldiers at a time can train on each individual tank, and in the new facility about 100 soldiers can train simultaneously.
Fort Benning's Commanding General says the maintenance the school teaches is key in crisis situations.
Major General Robert Brown said, “if you're going into combat and they're not all running, you know, it's like playing football with only half the team, that wouldn't be good. You got to have them all out there and these mechanics do a great job, they are the best in the world, because of the facilities provided. so we're very excited about that.”
Major General Brown says he's glad the Infantry and Armor soldiers can now train the way they fight....together.
