Area shelters are weighing in after News 3 aired a story about the House of Mercy's stance on homosexuality.
The House of Mercy recently kicked out two women suspected of being gay. The director says the women were kicked out for breaking other rules. Both women deny the rumors. Meanwhile, House of Mercy Director Elder Bobby Harris says the homeless shelter welcomes gays, but only if they are willing to reform.
News 3 asked other shelters, including faith-based organizations, how they handle this social and practical issue. No other shelter in town said it would deny a homeless person entry for being a practicing homosexual. However, all the shelters, like the House of Mercy, have a no sexual contact policy for all people under their roofs.
Valerie McLain of the Crisis Center of Russell County tells News 3 her shelter welcomes all women.
"We welcome anyone that is a victim," McLain said. "We make no discrimination with anyone. We're not in the business of revictimizing the victim."
