Many students look forward to buying new school supplies to go along with the new school year. The United Way of Lee County Inc. is hoping to help give that experience to students in need.
United Way’s second annual “Stuff the Bus” event kicks off Friday.
“We just felt like we wanted to be able to give back to the children in the schools,” said Kristen Meadows, United Way campaign manager. “So this is a great way to help out, especially (for) those kids who are in need.”
Collection bins and volunteers will be located at both the Auburn and Opelika Walmart stores from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Bins will remain at those locations through Sunday. After receiving the school supplies, United Way workers will divide them up for distribution to Auburn City Schools, Lee County Schools and Opelika City Schools students.
The United Way hopes to collect supplies such as crayons, colored pencils, glue sticks, notebook paper and book bags.
Meadows said the organization’s goal is to exceed last year’s collection, worth between $2,000 and $3,000.
