Georgia Governor Nathan Deal is visits Columbus for various speaking arrangements.
During a recent trip to England and Germany, Governor Nathan Deal said he highlighted Georgia's strengths like the International Atlanta airport and Savannah port.
Something Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson did, as well, on her trip to Germany.
The governor said those are the tactics he is using to entice new business. “We have a good interstate system. We have good rail connectivity. All of those make Georgia very good and desirable place to do business. So we are hopeful we will have some really good job announcements to come out of our trip.”
The republican governor said within the next 18 months he should reveal the new opportunities.
Chamber of Commerce President Mike Gaymon said Governor Deal and the Georgia Economic Development Commissioner have already been helping to bring new growth to Columbus.
Gaymon said, “He helped us initiate some letters that went from Governor Deal that said I'm not, I've been elected Governor I'm not governor yet. But we'd love for you to consider Georgia and as soon as I become governor if there is anything I can do to help, please know I am willing to do that.”
Despite the cheating scandal in Atlanta and the water wars debate, the governor said he is not losing focus. “Well I do think you have to prioritize. I think the number one goal that I have always had is better private job creation for our state. We still have an unacceptably high unemployment rate.”
The governor said he hopes there will be more local job opportunities before the year and a half time line for new international business.
“We try to make sure that we don't forget the industries and the business here at home. Because they are the ones if they grow and they prosper we will see the results more immediately than perhaps than waiting for someone to build a new factory,” Deal said.
