144,000. That's the number of people Fort Benning officials are anticipating will be on post daily after the Base Realignment and Closure process is complete.
When you enter the gates, things on the other side are changing. Red dirt almost everywhere you turn is one way to see the three and a half billion dollars of your tax money at work.
Public Information Officer, Cindy Andrus said, “A lot of the facilities here are still under warranty. So there is a real careful balance about, well can we get in the building before the warranty expires. Which is what you want to do so you can discover any things that need to be repaired, or tweaked, or what have you, while it’s still under warranty.”
As each day passes, another building inches closer towards completion. Andrus said, “The Abrams School hasn't even started yet. That building is just now coming online.”
A large proponent for the majority of growth at Fort Benning is efficiency. Whether it's moving traffic through post quicker or adding green options to new buildings.
The PIO said, “80% of [the MCOE headquarters] this building has been recycled as part of the renovation project.”
Another major addition to the post is the brand new MCOE building. “Building 4 or the headquarters for the Maneuver Center of Excellence will include many classrooms and other supporting offices and staff,” Andrus said.
July 22 will be the last day for Armor classes at Fort Knox. Andrus said, “So after that Fort Knox, as far as an Armor School will be history.”
The spokesperson said by 2016 the military will have spent $1.2 billion on Harmony Church alone.
