The Lee County Humane Society is letting its feline friends jump the queue in June to try to level the playing field between cat and dog adoptions.
The shelter is waiving its $80 adoption fee for cats four months and older, but it's keeping the same spay, neuter and vaccination perks that come with the adoption.
"Our cats a lot of times will get overlooked, and we have a lot of great cats that all need homes," said Stacee Peer, Director of Public Relations and Outreach for the humane society.
In June of 2010, only nine cats were adopted to 40 dogs and puppies. The shelter takes in more than 6,000 animals a year, most of which are cats.
Interested cat owners need to bring a pet carrier or crate (or purchase a cardboard one at the shelter) in order to safely transport their new pet. Other than that, they need only bring a valid form of photo identification.
The Lee County Humane Society is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time.
