Today marked the ribbon cutting for the new gateway to Fort Benning at interstate 185 and Victory drive.
The 6.8 million dollar gateway project is now complete after five years in the making. Gateway Foundation Chairman John Flournoy is one of the brains behind the idea. He told News 3, "So then we decided that we would undertake it and make it something really special because it warranted something special, it should have been something special 28 years ago when they put the interstate down there."
The gateway boasts four statues along victory drive. Coming south from Columbus, you will see a horse mounted cavalry man along with the 'follow me' infantry man to symbolize the armor and infantry schools. Heading out of Fort Benning stand two bald eagles, which Flournoy says symbolizes power to the soldiers.
In addition 20 fountains paired with 20 illuminated 50 foot flag poles line each side of the gateway to tie it all together. Flournoy has plans to keep the monument in pristine condition and continue to honor and welcome soldiers and guests.
