It's Super Bowl Sunday this weekend and whether you’re going to a house party or a local sports bar to watch the game, local law enforcement wants you to ditch the car keys if you’re going to drink.
Columbus resident Kelvin Thomas said he’s looking forward to watching the Super Bowl with friends.
“Everybody eats and has a few drinks. The next thing you know the game kicks off,” said Thomas.
For those who might celebrate too hard with alcohol, Thomas said they'll have a place to stay.
“Everyone gets to crash and take it easy,” said Thomas.
If you don't plan on going to a house party to watch the Super Bowl Captain Curtis Lockette with the Muscogee County Marshal's Office said to make sure there's a designated driver.
“According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration back in 2010 31 of the total fatalities for that Super Bowl Sunday were alcohol related,” said Captain Lockette.
Captain Lockette said if you think there is a drunk driver on the road give them room and call 911 to get them safely off the roadway.
Becky Miller said she has a plan in place so she doesn't get in the driver seat drunk.
“My husband is great or any friends that are pregnant those are always good too because you'll know they'll be safe,” said Miller.
Thomas said while folks might know not to drink and drive it's important that they follow that message.
“You don't want to get out and hurt the little kids or somebody that would kill the Super Bowl right there. You can have your drink and have fun but drinking and driving it’s not cool,” said Thomas.
If you need a safe ride home after having too much to drink this Super Bowl weekend AAA is offering its free Tow to Go program. The Two to Go program is a confidential ride and tow home from any bar or restaurant. If you want to take advantage of the service the number to call is 1-800-AAA-HELP (4357).
