It's been a tough couple of days for Tammy Phillips as she copes with the aftermath of the accident. And while the cuts on her body start to heal, she says it will take much more time to revive her wounded heart.
"All of a sudden, felt a boom. And he turned around and looked at me and I turned around and looked at him and after that I don't remember anything else,” said Tammy Phillips as she reflects on her last moment with Willie Lawrence, who friends and family lovingly call "Buck."
He’s the man Tammy hoped to call her husband. The two were engaged and planning a wedding for May. She was in the car with Lawrence when the accident happened.
“Buck was a very caring, giving person....Everybody loved him,” said Phillips.
Loved ones gathered at the couple's home, offering support and sharing memories.
"Buck loved people. He loved to laugh. His passion was basketball,” said Phillips.
Lawrence played with friends on the Curtis Marshall Lakers team in Columbus. Friends say he loved fishing, was a good father, and a die-hard Atlanta Falcons fan, who was always up for a little competition.
“He was good at everything he did. He may win one time, I may win the next…It's something I'm going to miss,” said a relative.
"If you needed a smile on your face this was the place to come because he would have you laughing the whole time,” said Shaunneka Phillips.
Though they couldn't save Lawrence, Phillips says she's grateful for the good samaritans who stopped to help.
"If possible, I would like to meet you all that came to my rescue, because I'd like to say thank you,” said Phillips.
