The 'Ten Commandments Judge' is at it again

The “Ten Commandments Judge” is back at it again, hitting the campaign trial in an effort to be re-elected as Alabama’s Supreme Court Chief Justice.

News 3 caught up with candidate Moore this afternoon.

Judge Roy Moore was elected as Chief Justice back in 2000 but was removed from the post in 2003. He says, “the reason I was removed was because I stood up for a principle of the constitution, and I will always stand up for the principles of the constitution, and the acknowledgement of god."

Moore was removed by the ethics panel after he failed to abide by a federal judge’s order to remove an over two-ton granite Ten Commandments display from the State Supreme Court Building.

He also had a small display in his courtroom. Moore says he regrets the way the issue was portrayed.

He adds, "it was about the acknowledgement of the sovereignty of God, and that's something we've got no option in, we have to acknowledge the sovereignty of God."

Moore says his nickname “The Ten Commandments Judge," has not stopped him from running for the same position he was removed from almost 9 years ago.

"Well I think there's a great need in the judicial system for leadership, the budget has been cut quite a lot, and there's a lot of problems I think I can handle, I know I can handle, I have handled them before," when asked what sparked his interest to run again.

When asked if he felt like voters were at risk of wasting their vote on a candidate prepared to push his career aside for his beliefs, Moore had one answer, "you know the biggest problem we have with courts and politicians these days is they don't stand for anything, they say one thing and they'll do another, I’ll do what I say I'll do.”

Voters can plan to hit the polls March 13th, months ahead of the traditional June primary date.

The March 2nd deadline for voter registration is quickly approaching. If you have not yet registered to vote you'll have to pick up one of these forms, which you can get at the Lee County Courthouse.

Forms are also available to download offline from the county website.

You can also find them at various public offices around Lee County.
