Preliminary results of the examination of human remains sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences last week that were found in an Opelika trailer park indicate that the individual died by homicidal means and is now an official homicide investigation. No cause of death has been determined yet.

Around 9:30 AM Saturday, January 28, a human skull was located at lot 47 Brook Haven Trailer Park at 1775 Hurst Street in Opelika. Then on Monday, January 30, additional skeletal remains were located near where the skull was located. On Wednesday, February 1, Opelika Police with assistance from Auburn Police and Lee County Sheriff’s deputies conducted another search of the heavily wooded area adjacent to the trailer park and located more human remains within 50-75 feet of where the skull was found on Saturday. Based on the examination of the skeletal remains, it is believed that the remains belong to a child less than 10 years of age. The race and sex are still to be determined and the examination of the skeletal remains is ongoing.

The case remains under investigation by the Opelika Police Department Investigative Services Division., the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences and the Lee County Coroner’s office.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Opelika Police Department Investigative Services Division at (334) 705-5220 or the Secret Witness Hotline at (334) 745-8665 or the Lee County Coroner’s Office at (334)737-3620.
