It seems like every day a new political controversy pops up, but it’s not very often that folks get to speak one on one with someone right in the middle of the action.
Alabama's senior Republican United States Senator, Richard Shelby, says he feels it is important not to disappear when elected into national office. In an effort to reconnect with his home state, Senator Shelby has been coming to Phenix City's annual town hall meeting for almost 30 years.
It was standing room only at Phenix City's "Girlfriend's" restaurant for this year’s town hall meeting.
City leaders and citizens gathered to hear from US Senator Richard Shelby.
Phenix City Mayor Sonny Coulter adds that too many national politicians forget where they come from, but feels that is not the case with Senator Shelby.
"It is wonderful to have him come and sit with us, and talk about the things that are happening in Washington, in Alabama, in Phenix City and he has a genuine interest in what is going on here at home," says Mayor Coulter.
Senator Shelby touched on subjects from education to national debt, answering questions from everyone in the crowd.
He says, “it gives me the feel of the people, let them talk, and we have a conversation about important issues, issues that will face them here, issues that will face the nation and affect us here."
With the Presidential elections fast approaching, the opinion of Republican Senator Shelby was certainly a hot topic.
He was not shy to share his opinion, saying, "In November, I hope we have a new president, a Republican president, and I hope we have control of the United States Senate where I serve, that would be a good day."
However, at this point, Senator Shelby says he has not chosen to support a particular candidate. He adds, "I know all of them, I’m going to support whoever comes out of the November primaries, but I am working to try and take control of the US senate."
When asked about President Obama’s recent announcement regarding birth control being distributed by catholic affiliated businesses and institutions he said simply, "I feel the President has overstepped himself and then backed off a bit."
Phenix City was the first of many stops for Senator Shelby this weekend. He made his way across the state ensuring no county was left out.
