As the "Heroes for Hire" bill moves through the Alabama legislature supporters of the bill hope it will also move recently returned war veterans to the front of employment lines.
“It is hard for anyone to find a job in Alabama but especially coming back from combat or a war zone or separating from the service in general because you've been disconnected,” said the President of the Military Officers Association for the East Central Alabama Chapter, Michael Golden.
House bill 152 offers businesses a $2,000 tax credit for hiring recently discharged veterans. The Military Officers Association for the East Central Alabama Chapter supports the bill. The organization's President, Michael Golden, said if the proposal becomes a reality he hopes it's a smooth process for Alabama employers.
“If the paper work is simple and the credit is easy to get then it will obviously be favorable for the employer to do that. If it becomes very difficult they'll probably say it’s not worth my time and effort to do that,” said Golden.
Golden said employers will find that hiring veterans is a great investment.
“Veterans are hard workers, they are used to sacrifice, they can move on a dime and they are really good employees they just need the opportunity to be employed,” said Golden.
Golden said as Alabama veterans return home employers could help give them one less thing to worry about when transitioning back to civilian life.
“These folks pay with their lives, their body parts, with their minds and with their families,” said Golden.
The "Heroes for Hire” bill also provides a $2,000 income tax credit to a recently discharged veteran who starts their own business. The unemployed veteran has to be an Alabama resident and was honorably discharged within two years of the date of hire.
