19 families will soon realize the dream of homeownership in the New Year with help from the Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity.
“I’m just so happy. I mean our mom has been working so hard for this and we're finally getting a place and it feels so good,” said Jessica Williams.
Williams along with her two siblings and mom are one of the 19 new Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity families who will be getting a home.
“We're building towards our own foundation every little nail everything we put in is ours,” said Jessica’s mom Loretta Baldwin.
Helping build your dream is key to being able to participate in the nonprofit organization. A habitat homeowner volunteers at least 150 sweat equity hours building another habitat home.
“The houses are built with the volunteer efforts of the community and as habitat partner families it is their obligation to do that same thing,” said Executive Director of the Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity, Brinkley Pound.
Pound said the organization helps families understand what it means to have a place to call their own.
“The homes are mortgaged to the homeowners. They’re sold to them with a no profit, no interest mortgage that allows them to keep their payments within the acceptable guidelines of a home ownership mortgage payment and what their income is,” said Pound.
Marilyn Johnson said not even in her wildest dreams she thought she could be a homeowner.
“I'm so proud of myself because I actually did this on my own. I did it on my own even when it came down to the deposit and [her daughter said] mom you need help and I said no I got this,” said Johnson.
For Carrie Bishop she said the news of qualifying for a habitat home couldn't have come at a better time, a few days before Christmas.
“It's great to see how people come together to offer such an opportunity to people who can't regularly afford housing under normal circumstances,” said Bishop.
These three families have months to wait to get their keys to their dream home. In the mean time they'll help build three habitat homes Saturday for folks who are closer to the reality.
The Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity 2013 pre-applications for housing will be available at the habitat office on Martin Luther King Boulevard starting January 10th or online at http://www.columbusareahabitat.com/
