Celebration and history in the making during the NAACP Georgia State Conference presidential inauguration Saturday.
It's the first time in the Georgia State Conference NAACP 70 year history that a sitting state president, state secretary and state youth & college division officers were elected to serve from the city of Columbus.
At his own place of worship, Peaceful Holiness Church in Columbus," Edward Dubose received warm words of support and appreciation from local and state leaders during the NAACP Georgia State Conference Presidential Inauguration and Officer Installation Ceremony. This will be president's fourth term.
“It feels good to know that how many people respect the NAACP. How much people understand how significant this civil rights organization has been for 103 years,” said Dubose.
Among the officers being installed--Tonza Thomas marking the first time in the history of the Columbus branch, that a woman was elected to the Georgia State Conference NAACP.
“I really thank God. Today's issues need today’s leaders,” said Thomas.
As for this year's agenda, Dubose says voter registration and mobilization are priority.
“We have over 800,000 unregistered African-American voters. We are contributing to our own oppression. So what we shared during this speaking engagement is that it's time for us to recognize that there are some things within our reach. Voting is one,” said Dubose
After the program, a special wreath laying ceremony was held at green acres cemetery for Dr. Thomas H. Brewer, who's recognized as a martyr of the civil rights movement, and a founding member of the NAACP Columbus Branch.
“He could have chosen to do anything he wanted but he understood the importance of justice. he gave the ultimate sacrifice,” said Dubose.
