Federal Trade Commission Crackdown; 600,000 People Bilked

The Federal Trade Commission is going after those accused of trying to take advantage of people worried
about the tough economy.

The FTC, the nation’s consumer protection agency,  says these companies or individuals bilked 600,000
people out of about $300 million. The ploys used by the scammers include promising jobs that don’t exist,
get-rich-quick schemes, bogus government grants, and phony debt-reduction services.

Dubbed “Operation Short Change,“ the law enforcement sweep announced Wednesday
includes 15 FTC cases, 44 law enforcement actions by the Department of Justice, and actions by at least 13 states. For a look at the companies and individuals charged, follow this link http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2009/07/shortchange.shtm
