Hot Dogs Sizzle This Summer
Fire up the grill, because the biggest hot dog holiday of the year is here.
Americans will eat an estimated 150 million hot dogs on the 4th of July. News 3 explains why, frankly, the hot dog business is sizzling.
He’s been called the Paula Deen of hot dogs. Lt. Stevens is a 63 year veteran of Dinglewood Pharmacy, “My first recollection of a hot dog was in 1946 when I came, I’d never heard of them until I came here.”
Now Lt. Stevens serves up scramble dogs, covered in cheese, slaw, chili and oyster crackers, to over 500 a day.
But how many buns can one City support?
Destiny Dogs owner Kenny Williams says customers keep his dogs cooking, “It’s like American apple pie, everybody eats hot dogs.”
Williams says, “If people are going to eat out, they’re going try to find something that is a bit cheaper, hot dogs are cheaper and it’s a good meal.”
It’s been a meal ticket across town. Don’s Dog House says the competition - well, he’ll cook ‘em. Every hot dog is different, that’s what keeps his customers on a leash, “Everywhere you go there are different hot dogs, people have different flavors.”
But there is one question even Lt. Stevens can’t answer, “What’s in a hot dog…....”
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council says Americans eat over 7 billion hot dogs between Memorial Day and Labor day.
