At least thirteen people are dead with 31 others injured. Investigators say the gunman is 39 year old Army Major Nadal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist.
Hasan opened fire at the post’s Soldier Readiness Facility Thursday afternoon. Officials say authorities’ originally thought the shooter was one of the thirteen victims. The mistake meant it took several hours to identify Hasan as the gunman.
Military officials say a civilian police officer shot Hasan during the rampage. He is on a ventilator, unconscious and under guard in a hospital.
Lt. Gen. Robert Cone told reporters yesterday, ”The investigation is ongoing, but preliminary reports indicate there was a single shooter that was shot multiple times at the scene shooting; however, he was not killed as previously reported. He’s currently in custody and in stable condition.”
Law enforcement officials say Hasan came to their attention at least six months ago, because of Internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats. It’s not yet certain he authored the
posts.
Officials are also not ruling out the possibility that some of the casualties may have been victims of “friendly fire.“
