Update In Don Siegelman Corruption Case
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Artur Davis says he respects
the decision of the 11th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals Friday
upholding much of the corruption conviction of former Alabama Gov.
Don Siegelman.
Davis said he extends his sympathy and prayers to Siegelman and
his family.
He also says he continues to question whether partisan motives
influenced the charges that were initially filed against Siegelman.
The former governor says he is disappointed with the ruling of a
three-judge panel of the 11th US. Circuit Court of Appeals
upholding most of his conviction in a government corruption case.
Siegelman says in a statement sent by e-mail to supporters that
he will continue to fight his conviction and sill expects to win.
Siegelman’s attorneys say they will ask the entire 11th Circuit
Court of Appeals to review the ruling of the three-judge panel.
Attorney David McDonald says if necessary Siegelman will appeal
to the US. Supreme Court.
The court upheld key bribery, conspiracy and obstruction counts
against Siegelman in what prosecutors described as a scheme that
put former Health South CEO Richard Scrushy on a state hospital
regulatory board. The court upheld all six counts against Scrushy
and his sentence of almost seven years.
The court threw out two of seven counts against Siegelman and
ordered a new sentencing hearing for the former governor.
