The Alabama Board of Education voted Thursday for a plan to require teachers and other education employees to contribute more to their own retirement and health insurance benefits.

The board recommended that education employees pay 6 percent, rather than 5 percent toward retirement. As for health insurance benefits, the board recommended that the program cut benefits or raise employees’ contribution. State Superintendent of Educaiton Joe Morton said that educators have only been paying $2 a month for health insurance since 1986.
