Auburn police and fire investigators are trying to find out why four homes went up in flames early Wednesday morning.
Investigators are calling the fire suspicious and say the cause is undetermined.
The fire destroyed four homes on Tuscany Hills Drive; those are located in the Tuscany Hills subdivision off North College Street in Auburn.
Auburn Fire Chief Lee Lamar says firefighters arrived on the scene just before 3:30 Wednesday morning.
At that time, the fire has spread to three surrounding homes.
Chief Lamar says the new homes were still under-construction; that means they don’t have the levels of protection that finished homes have and he says that allows fires to spread faster.
No one was living in any of the homes and no firefighters were injured.
In total, 4 homes were completely destroyed and a fifth home was slightly damaged.
Investigators are now trying to figure out who owns the property.
They will also be looking at any evidence they can collect and questioning anyone who may have information.
“These are difficult crimes, if it is indeed a crime, to prove and with good evidence protection and getting the right people in place early, it can make all the difference in the world,” says Chief Lamar.
The Alabama State Fire Marshal and the Auburn Police Department are investigating the fire.
