Fort Mitchell Residents Against Annexation
Published: July 8, 2009
Some Fort Mitchell residents are speaking out against annexation. All the fuss is being raised because Phenix city councilor Arthur Sumbry wants to include a part of Fort Mitchell into Phenix city to give some residents city services. During the Russell County commissioners meeting, several residents took the opportunity to address concerns about possible annexation. And their message was that the they are against being included into phenix city. By phone Phenix city councilor Aurthur Sumbry told news 3 he did nothing wrong. He said he wants residents to sign a petition that would allow them to be annexed into Phenix city.
By doing that, it would provide them sewer service and police and fire protection. The Phenix city attorney says Sumbrys actions are legal and he is free to talk to county residents if he so chooses.

So don’t sign the petition! Phenix City has never annexed anyone who did not petition to be annexed and has opposed efforts to use more aggressive annexation methods such as legislative annexation and annexation elections. Fort Mitchell is already in the Phenix City police jurisdiction and largely gets fire protection through mutual aid with Phenix City. The biggest advantages for them would be residential trash pickup and sanitary sewer to replace their septic tanks.
