Safe and Drug Free Schools of Muscogee County joined forces with Alcohol and Drug Awareness groups to stage their 10th annual DUI re-enactment.
Hundreds of Junior and Senior high school students (most at the legal age to drive) came together today to view what they believed would be a lecture about the consequences of drinking and driving but that quickly changed.
A scene depicting the events of an alcohol related accident was all it took to grab the attention of the high school students.
“I think it was sad! I was crying,“ says Kendrick High School Junior Lakedrious Stanford.
The re-enactment began at the scene of a fatal accident, but things got even more real when guest speaker (former Alabama football star) Sarin Stacy gave his testimony. Two years ago, a drunk driver killed his wife and 4 of his 5 children.
“The choices that teenagers are having to make every single day, they’re not just easy choices, they’re life determining choices,“ says Stacy.
He wants students to know what he lives with, and without everyday of his life. He hopes they will learn to think before they make life changing decisions.
“I don’t smoke, or drink so I mean I don’t plan on doing, but now, I definitely don’t think I’ll do it,“ says Stanford.
Stacy believes his willingness to share his personal tragedy, coupled with the re-enactment will help students understand the severity of drinking and driving.
“You make it real to them and you would hope that someone that’s making those bad choices turn around and start making the good choices.“
Standford agrees,“ Probably half of the people that was in there probably smoke or drink. Now they probably look at it like I need to stop because I could be in that situation.“
And if there is one other thing Stacy wants students to take away from his speech, it’s is unwavering faith.
“It would be knowing that there is a God, he restores and he gives back everything you’ve lost.“
