Lane Tyus has been teaching for five years.  She started her teaching career at Shaw High School in Columbus.  The past four years she’s been teaching English and American literature at Harris County High.  Ms. Lane says, “ I teach because I feel like it’s my purpose in life.  I feel like I’m able to reach my students and to push them and to help them find the true meaning of life through English.“  Ms. Lane was nominated for the Golden Apple by Lauren Ellis.  She had Ms. Lane last year and says she made a big impact on her life.  Lauren was impressed by Ms. Lane’s willingness to go beyond just grading papers.  Lauren recalls, “At one point I wasn’t doing my best and Ms. Lane knew.  She told me I know you can do better than this and I know that’s not your best.  She cares and she took the time enough to, not just grade my paper, but to take the time to realize it wasn’t me.“  Lane is thankful students remember her after leaving her classroom.  “That makes me feel even better just because then I can tell even after having them in class that maybe I can make an impression that they can carry on with them and remind them of how much they can accomplish.“
