The 3rd Brigade is plugging into social Media gaining thousands of followers. The Brigade launched their blog, Facebook and Twitter last spring. Now, their Twitter following has grown to 2,000.Their Facebook page has 1,000 friends and 5,000 people subscribe to their weekly Newsletter.

The Brigade says it’s part of a push to keep friends and family updated in real time during training and deployments, something they say is successful because of the popularity of sites like You Tube, Twitter and Facebook.

PFC Erik Anderson runs the Brigade’s Twitter and Facebook accounts, “That’s where social media really hits its niche. It’s something they already use. It’s not an extra step, or a different website for them to go see. Right there in their timeline or in their news feed is the latest news of the 3rd Brigade.”

Soldiers are allowed to blog, Facebook and Twitter when they are deployed. The motto for the Army- security at the source. It means every soldier is responsible for choosing carefully what information they post online.
