Phenix City Residents Say They Are Fed Up With...
A Phenix City neighborhood says it is time for the city to take action on a flooding problem they have faced for over 30 years. They live in Crowell Park neighborhood.News Three brought you the story about residents in the Crowell Park Neighborhood back in July. The residents say when it rains they are left with one big mess.
Residents living in the Crowell Park Subdivision say they have been dealing with this mess for over 30 years. News Three has pictures from how the neighborhood looked when the area was flooded over the summer. Residents blame 2 culprits.
“The backyard is affected by the creek and the front yard is affected by the runoff from the hill,“ says resident Kathy Lewis.
The creek that Kathy Lewis is talking about is the Cochgalechee Creek. The creek is the city’s responsibility. But the hill where water runs off is privately owned. So, the city’s hands are tied.
“We’re flooding down here in Crowell Park and we need to stop assessing and actually start doing some work,“ admits Mayor Sonny Coulter.
But the Mayor says they can only fix the creek problem. As for the water runoff from the hill, his advice? Take it to court.
“If it is serious and important enough to people that’s where it’ll wind up in this particular situation that may be the case,“ says Coulter.
Lewis says court is one option, another may be the State Capital.
“Or maybe we need to talk with the leaders in Montgomery just to see the next step,“ says Lewis. It’s a step they hope will finally lead to drier land.
