ATLANTA (AP) - Department of Transportation board members have
chosen unanimously state Representative Vance Smith to take over as
the department’s commissioner by June 25.
Smith, chairman of the House Transportation Committee, takes
over nearly four months after board members voted to oust former
Commissioner Gena Evans following allegations of ethics violations
and inappropriate e-mails. The Pine Mountain Republican will give
up his seat to take the full-time position.
Smith says he’s excited and anticipates challenges budget wise,
but also lots of opportunity.
Evans was voted out in February following allegations of ethics
violations and sending improper e-mails using state computers.
Evans beat Smith, chairman of the House Transportation
Committee, for the post on a 7-6 vote in October 2007.
