State Superintendent Kathy Cox is in Columbus today. She’ll visit three Columbus schools to see students and educators face to face. “These visits give me the opportunity to meet face-to-face with the people on the front lines of education in Georgia, said State Superintendent Kathy Cox.  “What I learn on the road has a big impact on the work of the Georgia Department of Education and the State Board of Education.”

Cox is also in Columbus for the Legislative Express. This event is in its third year and is hosted by the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce. Each year, community leaders talk with state and federal figures about what the growing community needs. This year, talks will center around BRAC’s expected impact on education in the area. According to the Chamber of Commerce, 4,700 school age children are expected thanks to the Base Realignment and Closure plan by 2011.

If you’d like to attend the Legislative Express, you can head to the Chamber of Commerce on 6th Avenue in Columbus. There is a fee of $35 for members/$70 for nonmembers. The event begins at 5:55 p.m. tonight. Call (706) 327-1566 for more information.
