Walker is big where it counts
jordan volleyball player does not let height get her downPublished: September 17, 2009
Columbus, GA - When someone is tall, people always ask, “do you play basketball?“ But when someone is vertically challenged, people do not assume they are good at sports. But a Red Jacket volleyball players is showing that height is only a number. Jordan High setter, Deshawnvia Walker stands 4’10”, or 4’11” on a good day. She takes after her mother.
“Well my mom, is 5’1”, my dad is 6 feet,“ Walker said.
“When I first saw her, I thought okay, she is short, but what can I do with her,“ head coach Tammie Barnes said. “When other players where bending to go under the net, she just walked right up under the net.“
“Some times I can’t see, so the players on the other team have to move over,“ Walker said. But being shorter also has it’s advantages. “Because I am short, it’s easier for me to get to the balls when they come low.“
“When people come see D, they always ask me who is that little girl. She is a firecracker, they call her little firecracker,“ Barnes said.
Walker is the team captain and has helped guide Jordan to an unbeaten region record as they hope to make another trip to the post-season. Walker says the only size that matters, is the one that is not measured.
“She is the smallest person, but she has the biggest heart,“ Barnes said. “She is an example and she sets the example, she sets the bar, because if she can do it, anybody can do it.“
“I think I’m like every other volleyball player, just a little shorter,“ Walker said.
Which is something, we can all look up to.
