You have a chance to get you favorite 4 legged friend in the 2010 Best Friends Calendar for the Lee County Humane Society.
The Best Friends Calendar is a celebration of Lee County pets and helps raise money for the animals at the shelter. The shelter will accept entries on June 1. Each entry should be submitted with a $10.00 donation to the shelter. Registration forms are available online at www.leecountyhumane.org or at the shelter.
All entries must be received by June 19 at 5:00 p.m. at the shelter.
Voting for the calendar will begin June 22 at the shelter, online and at various community events and locations throughout the summer. Voting will end August 22 at the Lee County Humane Society’s annual Woofstock celebration.
Each vote costs $1.00 and the pet with the most votes will be featured on the cover of the calendar and the month of their choice.

A new study says beer sales are up 5.6 percent this year, junk food sales are up close to 10 percent and sales for doughnuts are up 4.3 percent.
The manager at B Merrell’s in Columbus says beer sales are up, especially domestic beers.
Customers we talked with say it makes perfect sense; people are drinking and eating junk food because it’s cheap.
One man said when we are in a recession, people are depressed and they drink.
The study also found that more Americans are watching television.
The average American now watches more than five hours of TV a day; that’s up 1.2 percent from last year.
Looks like the recession is making us watch our wallets but not our waistlines.

Opelika, Alabama has charm that is undeniable. I spent the afternoon talking with the City Administrator about the historic railroad town’s plan for the future.
Something I found interesting, most towns sport their worst neighborhoods next to railroad tracks, but not Opelika. It’s a treasure trove.
It started after the City held a number of development meetings last week to talk about recommendations for growth. Some things that popped up in those meetings- putting a trolley in between Auburn and Opelika on exisiting tracks, maybe even dinner trains to LaGrange and Newnan, making room for restaurants to have outdoor seating and expanding green space throughout the historic blocks.
And ladies, the shopping…....... incredibly cute and irresistible. Since I was on the clock I resisted the urge to meander through the countless adorable stores, but I highly recommend making a Saturday excursion of it.
The City says it will come back to the public in October once they get concret recommendations from an outside form on future growth opportunities, but there is plenty going on until then.
Take a drive and check out the work the City has done so far. Take a camera, an appetite and your credit card!

For the past few weeks Mo has been given the freedom to roam the house while I have been at work and until yesterday he was doing a great job! When I got home from work yesterday and opened my house door I just had to laugh at what I saw.

Mo pulled the cushions off of my couch, ripped open a cushion, and pulled out the foam all over the house! This picture really does not do the damage justice but thankfully the couch is old.
He also had a great time with the blinds ~ shredding them up ~ along with a DVD.

SO today he has had his privileges revoked. He will now go into the hallway where there is nothing, I hope, he can get a hold of and doors that will keep in confined to the area.
Before now I have been crating him but he has been doing something to himself causing his nose to bleed so I have had to let him out.

(the little white dot is where the injury is healing)
As I said before I have tried to use a baby gate but the little escape artist was able to overcome that one.
So here we are.
I am really running out of ideas and hope the hallway works, if you have any suggests PLEASE e-mail me at

As many of us struggle with money in this tough economy buying a pet for some has been put on hold, others have been forced to give their furry friends up, and some are skipping out on vet visits and cutting corners but having a dog does not have to be expensive.
You should never skip out on a vet visit, just like your health preventative care is always cheaper than waiting until the condition worsens. The place to cut back is on toys and grooming.
Mo maybe has two or three toys that I have bought him others are safe toys I have been given like his stuff teddy bear he loves! Most of the times we just go outside and he does his own thing.
He loves digging in the dirt …

And eating sticks…

It’s cheap, safe, and keeps him happy!
Another idea to keep your puppy happy while saving money buy a can of low sodium chicken broth and freeze it into little ice cubes - there nice cool treats for the hot summer days that are soon to come. Mo loves these.
You can also make your own treats. Here is a link for recipes.
Another ways to save money do your own grooming. I give Mo baths and clean his ears. I took him to get his ears cleaned once and it was 25 bucks so that was the first and last time we did that.
It’s easy to save money when it comes to your pet. If you have any other ideas e-mail me at
