PAWS Humane in Columbus Takes in Animals from Mississippi

The recently opened PAWS Humane shelter in Columbus is at capacity right now. They’re using the old shelter to house animals brought from a shelter in Clarksdale, Mississippi. The estimated thirty animals are still being assessed for their potential for adoption. PAWS workers say that several of the animals tested positive for heartworms and will now have to undergo treatment. That treatment will cost somewhere around $200 for each animal, depending on each animal’s weight. That cost does not include treatment for other health problems suffered by the animals. The animals came to be at PAWS because of a contact made during a recent pit bull raid in Talbotton, Georgia.

The first of the animals looking for forever homes will be available for adoption next week. More will become available for adoption as their health improves. Several types of dogs will be adoptable, from beagle mixes to lab mixes.

Right now, PAWS Humane is in dire need of monetary donations to help with the cost of treating the animals. They’re bringing the newcomers in to the new shelter as room becomes available. To donate, you can call PAWS at (706) 565-0035. For more information on adopting a new pet, go to PAWS Humane.
