With just 23 players on its roster, the Calvary Christian Football Team is making history. Last Friday night, they sampled the sweet taste of victory for the very first time. This week we meet the school's first ever Player of the Week.
It has been a long season for the Calvary Christian football team Up until last Friday night, Calvary hadn't won a game.
That's where our player of the week, Duncan Newton, comes in.
In the final moments of a game against Holy Ground Baptist academy, Newton hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jacob Ammons to tie the game at 21 apiece.
Then with just a few seconds remaining, Newton picked off a pass and returned it 41-yards for the winning touchdown.
Newton says, “At the end of the game I told them that I didn't want my heart broken anymore so i just stepped up and I just led the defense and got the W.”
Last Friday night's win was not just the first victory of the season for Calvary Christian.
It was the first win in school history.
That earned Calvary Coach Brian Osborne some overdue recognition and a Gatorade bath.
Osborne says, “He's a great athlete, we were losing 21-14 and we called a pass play and he used his speed and got behind the defense. Our quarterback threw it up and he ran up there and got it...so that tied the game at 21. Then with two seconds left in the game he just made a great read. The quarterback threw the ball up and he just cut on it..saw green grass and took it to the house for us.
To cap it all off, MES Credit Union representative Jason Mosely presented Calvary Christian Head Master Len McWilliams with a small gift and A sign recognizing Duncan Newton as this week's MEA Federal Credit Union's Player of the Week.
