    A deluge of rain Sunday dampened St. Mary’s Catholic Church’s celebration honoring Mary, Mother of the Americas, outside under tents on Mother’s Day. The pouring rain cut short a planned procession carrying the framed image of Our Lady of Guadalupe from the tents to a newly built shrine located next to the church on Fourth Avenue in Opelika.

  • Four-wheeler accident leaves one injured

    A single-vehicle accident with injuries to the driver was reported to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 2:55 p.m. Sunday. Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones said officers found a four-wheeler in the roadway in the 1800 block of Lee Road 281 with one rider injured.

    The Lee County Commission approved a disaster debris recovery services contract with D and J Enterprises in Auburn during their regular meeting Monday. The Lee County Emergency Management Agency and the Lee County Highway Department began looking into the need for such a contract following discussions of problems related to tornado destruction in nearby counties.

    It’s time to organize and sign up a team for the upcoming 2012 American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Lee County and begin to support those fighting cancer. “It’s very easy to get involved,” said volunteer Janet L. McCoy, who has family members who have had cancer. “We are always looking for more people to sign up.”
